German Grand Coalition Government

groko

Question:
I am quite interested in your reaction to the announced „grand coalition“ this morning in Berlin. I suspect I know what it is, but would love to see your interpretation of this.
posted on 27/11/2013 in Santa Ana (Costa Rica)

Answer:
While I would love to reply straight away, I am afraid I will have to ask you to allow some more time.

First of all, there are almost 200 pages of the Coalition Agreement which I will have to read. And also, the SPD’s rank and file will be asked to vote on whether they like this agreement – in fact, I applied to be a volunteer to help count those votes on December 14th, in Berlin.

If the members of the SPD vote „no“ to the agreement – as I suspect they will – it is not worth talking about Germany’s future coalition government yet. Since the „grand coalition“ agreement will have to be re-negotiated. Don’t expect to see a new German chancellor soon.

You surely know at what time of the year the disciples saw the „Risen Lord“. Well, I don’t expect to see a new German government to be formed any earlier than that, in 2014.

AirBNB in NewYork

This morning, I received an email from AirBNB, complaining about the way the company are being treated in New York. Since they removed my reply to them from their Facebook Page, I would like to share it here.

AirBNB

Dear Douglas Atkin,

I fully support the steps which the Attorney General of New York City has taken, in order to create a level playing field and to make AirBNB hosts pay taxes, just like every citizen does.

What you at AirBNB are doing to fight the legitimate aim of the Mayor of New York City is preposterous.

Grow up!

Yours sincerely

Neue deutsche Rechtschreibung

Some ten years ago, a group of silly professors from the German-speaking world (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) agreed on a new way to spell German. This was not universally adopted, of course, since the Swiss would never dream of using the letter „ß“ – it reminds them of Nazi Germany.

However, apart from these minor difficulties, German spelling was totally changed. This happened in a top-down process, of course, as is typical for Germany. There are many minor and a few major changes to the way the German language is spelled, but the most important one is this: the letter „ß“, also called „Ess-Zett“ or „Dreierles-Ess“ was all but removed from the German-speaking world. Only in very rare cases is it still seen in Germany these days, e.g. when signing letters „Mit freundlichen Grüßen“.

There was one leading German newspaper, the „Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung“ (F.A.Z.) who refused to comply. So for some years, they stuck to the „old“ way of spelling. However, this is now over. The F.A.Z., like almost everybody else in Germany, changed the way they spell when writing.

For school children, it became compulsory to use this new spelling order. School books had to be re-printed accordingly.

However, in private life, nobody can force changes upon you. Everybody in Germany, and Austria, and possibly Switzerland above the age of 20 still learned the old way of spelling, the author of these lines being one of those people. Therefore, I don’t see any reason at all to change. Just like the F.A.Z. argued, I take the liberty to spell the way I am used to. „Ich glaube, daß ich das Recht dazu habe“.

However, I wonder why my personal opinion on this topic seems to be so very rare in Germany. Why did everyone decide to forget what they learned in school, and follow the line of that bunch of old professors, instead?

SEPA Fascism

Those guys in Brussels are fascists. If people don’t like what they are doing, they simply force this onto them.

SEPA

In 2010, because the SEPA payment schemes had not caught on as a market-driven process, the European Commission took the initiative to set end-dates by which the national euro payment schemes for credit transfers and direct debits would be phased out.

Angela Merkel’s cell phone

Who the hell is bothered whether or what Mutti Angie is talking when using her mobile phone? So the NSA overheard her say „Joachim, dear, please go buy a pint of milk for tomorrow’s breakfast Müsli“. So what? Why do we need diplomatic confrontation because of that?

Of course, those responsible for technical appliances provided to European and World leaders, mainly those in Germany, Mexico and Brazil, could simply admit „Gosh, we didn’t use encryption. We just bought an ordinary cell phone and gave it to our nation’s leader in order for her to discuss national secrets“.

Well, that would be admitting stupidity. It would take some bravery to do that. Much easier to distract people’s attention by accusing Barack Obama, and the NSA, of spying and snooping. This is ridiculous, and shameful.

Boris Bikes

One week ago, I was in London. Yes, it was a very short trip. But it was worth it. It was good to have a business meeting, and more, on Monday. It was great meeting up with my old classmate at Heathrow Airport. And it was nice to go cycling in London using a Boris Bike.

01.10.2013 TFL CYCLE HIRE NORTHDOWN STR GBR GBP 2 (0.83682 EUR)

Boris Bikes

Yes, it did take me about half an hour to finally get a bicycle hired out on Tuesday morning, since I had to go to three different stations.

The first one didn’t have any bikes.
The second one’s printer was broken, so I was able to pay 2 pounds for gaining access to the system, but then the terminal wouldn’t let me borrow a bike since it wasn’t possible to print the release code.

But at the third one I finally got myself a Boris bike.

And then I rode through the borough of Camden and went and saw the guys at Telnic in order to learn more about tel domains, remember www.cla.tel

Thanksgiving (Erntedankfest)

We treat animals just as we like. We are naming them and thus we have dominion over them (Gen 1, 26).

Let me make this very clear using the example of one animal: the rabbit.

The rabbit is

  • a cartoon figure on TV
  • sitting in a cage and having medical experiments performed on
  • jumping out of a hat in the circus
  • a soft toy animal children like to cuddle with
  • bringing joy to many children as a pet
  • eating the flowers in our garden, which is a nuisance
  • delicious when roasted in the oven for the Easter celebrations
  • sometimes confused with the Easter Bunny

However, all this is always the same animal.
The rabbit is what we want it to be.

When celebrating Thanksgiving, we remember that God gave names to the animals, and he gave them their value.

German Bundestag Elections 2013

Angela Merkel may not yet realize it, but she just lost the German Bundestag elections.

She stands no realisitic chance of staying Chancellor if she enters into a coalition with the SPD, and there is no other coalition partner available.

So if the CDU wants to stay in Government, Ms Merkel will have to withdraw.
